On 1st February 2024 Norwich signed 23 year old Dutch forward Sydney van Hooijdonk on loan from Italian side Bologna with a buy option. He replaces Celtic-bound Adam Idah. Sydney had considerable interest from clubs in the Championship as well as from German side Mainz who tried to hijack the deal.
He is the son of Pierre van Hooijdonk, who played for Celtic and Nottingham Forest in the 1990s and won 46 caps for the Netherlands.
After playing for youth side VV Beek Vooruit, he joined NAC Breda in 2017. He made his league debut in October 2018 in a 2-1 defeat at Utrecht. NAC were relegated that season but the following campaign saw Sydney become a regular making 25 appearances scoring six goals. The following campaign saw him net 16 goals in 31 appearances. He scored a total of 23 goals in 70 appearances for NAC.
Out of contract, he signed for Bologna on 3rd July 2021 but he made just four appearances in his first campaign. On 25th January 2022 he returned to Holland joining Heerenveen on loan where he scored six times in 13 appearances. He returned to Heerenveen for the 2022/23 season scoring 16 goals in 35 games. Returning to Bologna, he made nine appearances ahead of his loan to Norwich.
At the time of the move, he had two caps for Holland's Under-21s.
He made his Norwich debut as a late substitute on 3rd February 2024 in the 2-1 win over Coventry. He returned to Italy at the end of the season having made 12 appearances for Norwich, all as substitute, without scoring
On 9th August 2024 he joined Serie B side Cesena.
