Biography

Former Blackburn Rovers and Manchester United defender Henning Berg revealed on 27th November 2013 that he has been scouting for Norwich City since March 2013 when he was recruited by Norwich chief scout Ewen Chester who was at Rangers when Berg finished his playing career at Ibrox in 2004.

Berg, who was capped 100 times by Norway, said: “Yes, I started working for them. It’s not like I have any real employment with them, but I take assignments where I see players and teams, write reports and give them feedback. Ewan Chester, the former chief scout at Rangers, got in touch with me. We have been in contact since the Rangers time, he knows how I think, and wondered if I could help.” He is believed to be covering the Bundesliga for Norwich.

Berg played for Norwegian sides Vålerenga and Lillestrøm before coming to England when Blackburn Rovers paid £400,000 for him in January 1993. Rovers manager Kenny Dalglish had been impressed by his performance for Norway against England in October 1992. He soon made the right-back position his own in the Rovers side and played a vital role in Blackburn's successful title-winning season under manager Kenny Dalglish in 1994–95, missing only two games throughout the season. He went on to make 159 league appearances for Blackburn

Berg's versatility (he was also a competent centre-back) and consistent performances for Blackburn earned him a move to Manchester United in 1997 for a fee of £5 million – at the time the joint-highest fee ever paid for a defender by a British club.

While at Manchester United, Berg helped the club win two league titles (1999 and 2000), one FA Cup in 1999 and one UEFA Champions League title in 1999; part of the famous Treble winning 1999 side, despite missing the two cup finals through injury. He made 66 league appearances for United before re-joining Blackburn on loan in September 2000. This became permanent and he spent three seasons at Rovers making 74 appearances.

His final season as a player was spent with Scottish side Rangers in 2003/04.

In April 2005, Berg was appointed manager of Norwegian side Lyn and took them to third place. He moved to Lillestrom in August 2008, signing a five year contract but was sacked in October 2011.

On 31st October 2012, Blackburn Rovers announced that Berg had accepted an offer for a three-year contract to manage the club. Berg's first match in charge of Blackburn came on 3 November 2012, a 2–0 defeat away to Crystal Palace. His first and only win was on 17 November 2012, a 4–1 victory away to Peterborough.[13] That was to prove to be his only win as Blackburn manager, as Berg was sacked on 27 December, after just 57 days in the post.

It is assumed that berg finished scouting for Norwich when he was appointed manager of Polish side Legia Warsaw on 19th December 2013, starting the job on 1st January 2014. He replaces Jan Urban who led Legia to the Polish double in 2013. Berg won the Polish title in his first season but was sacked on 5th October 2015.

On 5 May 2016 Berg signed a 2-year contract with Hungarian side Videoton. He was sacked at the end of the season and had a brief spell back in Norway managing Stabæk. On 6th June 2019 he signed a 2-year contract with Cypriot side Omonia. He led them to the Champions League as they were ranked first in the 2019/20 campaign which was cancelled due to Covid-19. The following year they won the league and the Super Cup, in 2020/21 they reached the group stage of the Europa League and the Europa Conference League but was sacked in February 2022 with their dismal league form seeing them outside the top six. On 12th June 2022 he was appointed manager of Cypriot side Pafos but was sacked in early April 2023 after the team went seven consecutive games without a win. He was then appointed manager of Swedish side AIK on 2nd July 2023.
