Henning Bjarnoey
had a trial with Norwich City in November 1981 and played in the
youth team as a striker alongside Keith Cannell in the South East
Counties League against Fulham (a 4-0 win) and Gillingham (1-1).
Youth team manager at the time,
Dave Stringer
praised him for his speed and decisiveness against Fulham. The matchday
programme for the League clash against Leicester City on 5th December
1981 stated "Bjarney is an interesting prospect. He is 17, quick
and competitive and looks a very good player, a point substantiated
by the fact that he is in line for a place in the Norwegian Olympic
team". He also had training periods with Norwich in 1982 and 1983.
Dag T Hoelseth of the Norwich City Supporters' Club of Scandinavia
provided me with further details of Henning's career. At the time
of his trials with Norwich, Henning was with Vaalerenga and that
he stayed there until 1990. This was a total of 20 years as Henning
had joined the club at the age of 6 in 1970. During this period,
he was capped for the Norwegian national side against Egypt in 1984.
He joined Lillehammer in 1990 but his career suffered too many injuries.
He was later player-coach for Manglerud/Star in 1992 retiring from
playing the following year. He has since retired from the game.
