Defensive midfielder Julien Brellier joined Norwich on 3rd July
2007. He is a defensive midfielder who plays just in front of
the back four.
Brellier started his career at French club Montpellier before
joining Italian giants Inter Milan in 2000. He made a limited
number of appearances with Inter and was loaned out to Lecco and
Legnano before joining Venezia, initially under a co-ownership
agreement. He played part of the 2004-05 season with Salernitana
before Venezia released him in May 2005.
Brellier was given a trial by Hearts, where he impressed manager
George Burley and was signed on a two year deal by the Edinburgh
side in August
Brellier quickly became a firm favourite with the Hearts fans
but it was frequently reported in the media that Hearts' owner
Vladimir Romanov did not share the supporters' high opinion of
him. Despite an offer of a two year contract from Hearts, Julien
signed a two-year deal at Carrow Road. Peter Grant said I
think he is a different midfielder from the ones we have,
he said. We have some guys who are good passers, we have
some guys who are good players technically. I think Julien gives
us a bit of both, but maybe a better understanding than most of
the boys we have of people's positions. He understands the game,
his tactical awareness is where I would put him at the top of
the list, and the way he plays. I don't bring people in who are
just going to be same as - it is very important that the ones
we are trying to bring in are different to the ones we already
have here.
He has been given the number eight shirt. Despite injury concerns
during the close season, he made his Norwich debut on the opening
day of the 2007/8 season in the 0-0 draw against Preston at Deepdale
Brellier was released by the Canaries on 11 January 2008 having
made just 11 appearances since his summer signing, and had not
figured for Glenn Roeder's team since the 3-0 defeat at Plymouth
on 10th November 2007. He quickly signed for Swiss side FC Sion.
Brelier was released by Sion at the beginning of March and has
been training with Grenoble
Unable to find team, he announced his retirement from the professional
game in January 2011 and will play for amateur side AC Seyssinet
in the seventh tier of the French league system.
Brellier said "I didn't have any opportunities. After
Sion, I had some National (French third division) clubs interested
so there was a chance to go there.Maybe 50 per cent of the teams
are professional in that league and 50 per cent are not. It was
not a good thing for me to go there so I decided to stop playing.
I had nothing from the first or second division and my agent told
me it was very hard trying to find a club. I don't know if I trust
him but it's just life and I had to stop because life goes on.
I have a family and it's better for my head to stop professional
football. The wait was too long. I knew it was not good to wait
again through January, then if nothing happens I wait again until
June and I keep training on my own. I'm not frustrated, it's just
life. I think in football now it is very hard for a lot of players
to fight for teams. I didn't want to say 'yes' to a proposal just
because I wanted to stay professional. I wanted to do something
I like. I think I will do some coaching courses to get the diploma
because that would be a good option maybe for some time in the
future. Football has always been my life and I think I can be
a good coach
