20 year old Senegal international wing back Pape Diop signed
from Lens on a one year loan contract in August 1999. He had impressed
Bruce Rioch in Daryl Sutch's testimonial
against AZ Alkmaar and in a reserve friendly against Ipswich.
There were no problems with work permits as Pape holds a French
passport. He signed from Racing Club Lens on a one year loan with
an option to secure his services beyond that point. Pape had spent
most of the previous season 1998/99)with French Division 2 side
Valenciennes.
Diop's stint at Carrow Road ended prematurely on 29th December
1999 when he signed for French side Racing Club de Paris of the
National League Division Two. Norwich boss Bruce Rioch claimed
the move had nothing to do with the allegations that Diop had
spat at QPR supporters during the stormy Boxing Day clash at Carrow
Road. In the Eastern Daily Press on 30th December, Rioch
said that the player and his Parisian wife had found it hard to
settle in England and that the move had been arranged some time
before the alleged spitting incident. Diop wanted to return to
France but was waiting for a suitable transfer window but although
his agent found him a club, Norwich requested a delay in the move
until after the Christmas period. Diop thus signed a three year
contract with the Paris side. It seems even more likely that he
would represent Senegal in the forthcoming African Nations Cup
as Rioch would not have permitted his absence if Pape was playing
regularly in the Norwich first team.
The English press then reported that Pape was part of the Senegalese
side that defeated holders France 1-0 in the opening clash of
the 2002 World Cup. He then allegedly played in the draw with
Denmark. However based on information from Canary Citizens, the
implication is that the press (including World Soccer) have confused
ex-Canary Pape Seydou Diop with Pape Malick Diop and Pape Bouba
Diop. Our "Pape Diop" transferred to Switzerland's FC
Aarau in the summer of 2002 (Thanks to Dag T Hoelseth for the
latest news). However the "Top of the Perch" article
in the 2004/5 Norwich City yearbook suggested that Pape was with
French side Noisy-le-Sec in 2001/2
In March 2003, the BBC
reported that Pape had signed a four year deal with Romanian giants
Dinamo Bucharest.
By 2008, Diop was in Albania with their current champions KS
Dinamo Tirana.
He later played with Levallois and Arras Football in France.
