Kevin made a footballing
name for himself at Grimsby where he scored 89 goals in 272 appearances.
He moved to Norwich in June 1985 with a tribunal fixing his value
at £105,000. His 22 league goals in his first season at Carrow
Road played a major role in Norwich's Division Two championship
and return to the top-flight. In 150 appearances for Norwich, he
scored 57 goals at a strike rate of 2.63 matches per goal. He joined
Scottish giants Rangers for £600,000 in June 1988 as Graeme
Souness' side won the Scottish league and Skol Cup. Kevin scored
19 goals in 42 matches for Rangers before joining Coventry in October
1989. At Highfield Road, he encountered a goals famine and was loaned
to Birmingham.
He returned to Scotland to join Falkirk as player-coach in July
1992. He moved to Stirling Albion in March 1994 where he has since
become manager. He led Stirling to promotion to Division One in
1996/97 with limited resources. However Stirling finished bottom
and were thus relegated in 1997/98. Kevin and Stirling parted company,
supposedly with "mutual consent". At the end of October 1998, Kevin
was appointed manager of lowly Montrose who were sitting at the
bottom of Scottish Division Three. Kevin was named by Teamtalk
as a potential (but in my opinion unwelcome) successor to Bruce
Rioch following his resignation on 13th March 2000. With Montrose
rooted firmly at the bottom of the Scottish League, Kevin was sacked
on 11th October 2000.
Kevin also expressed his interest in the vacancy caused by Bryan
Hamilton's resignation in early December 2000.
I had a charming conversation with Kevin at the Norwich City centenary
dinner. A true gentleman, Kevin was telling me about his current
employment. He is involved in matchday hospitality and writing
match reports. He also looks out for new talent and recommends
them to league clubs and to sports agents (thus acting as a middleman
/ referrer). This agency is called 110sport Management
Along with Mick Wadsworth, Kevin was
linked to the vacant Grimsby Town manager's position in February
2004.
He was appointed Assistant Manager of East Fife in the summer of 2013 but left in September 2013.
