Irish international defender Shane Duffy signed for Norwich on 9th June 2023 on a free transfer from Fulham. He signed a three year deal, effective from 1st July 2023.
Duffy was born in Derry, Northern Ireland and played for Foyle Harps. He represented Northern Ireland at Under-16 level on five ocassions, including a Victory Shield game against England in which he impressed Everton manager David Moyes.
He joined Everton as a first year scholar in November 2008 and worked his way through the youth and reserve teams. He made his debut against AEK Athens in the UEFA Europa League in December 2009 as substitute. He made his full debut in the same tournament, playing all 90 minutes at Goodison against BATE Borisov.
After an injury in a training match in 2010, he aided his recovery by going on loan to Burnley (1 appearance) and Scunthorpe (18 appearances). He had another loan spell, this time at Yeovil in September 2013 after falling down the pecking order at Everton. He made 14 appearances and then was loaned to Yeovil for a second spell in January 2014, making a total of 39 appearances.
He transferred to Blackburn Rovers on 1st September 2014 for £400,000, having made 10 appearances in total for Everton. Over the three seasons at Blackburn, he made 69 appearances, scoring seven goals.
He joined Brighton on 26th August 2016 for a reported club record fee of £4 million. Brighton won promotion to the Premier League in his first season. He would make 150 appearances, scoring 9 goals.
In September 2020 he joined Celtic on a season-long loan. He made 27 appearances overall, scoring three goals where Celtic finished as league runners-up. He returned to Brighton making 20 appearances the following season.
He joined Fulham on a season long loan on 5th August 2022. This was made permanent on 1st February 2023. However he only played seven games for the Cottagers.
Despite playing for Northern Ireland Under-16, Under-17, Under-18, Under-19 and B level, he switched allegience to the Republic of Ireland in May 2010 due to his Irish nationality. He then played for their Under-19 and Under-21 games before playing against Costa Rica in a June 2014 friendly. At the time of his transfer to Norwich, he had played 55 games. His first international goal was against Georgia in September 2017 in a World Cup qualifier. On 18 November 2019, he captained Republic of Ireland for the first time, as they drew 1–1 against Denmark. He was named Irish Senior International Player of the Year in 2017 and 2018.
Duffy made his Norwich debut on 5th Auguist 2023 in a 2-1 home win over Hull City on the opening day of the 2023/24 season and was unlucky not to score. He scored his first Norwich goal on 21st October 2023 in the 3-2 home defeat to Leeds. He made a total of 40 appearances in 2023/24 as Norwich finished sixth reaching the Championship play-offs, before losing 4-0 to Leeds.
