David Dyson can proudly boast that he was on the Norwich City
substitutes' bench for the clash with Bayern Munich. Unfortunately
this was not the famous UEFA cup
victory but rather the friendly that occurred on 28th January
1992. Injuries to Bryan Gunn and an FA
Youth Cup tie for Andy Marshall meant that City's "B" team keeper
David Dyson was called up as understudy to Mark Walton . David did not get to play but the experience
was invaluable considering that most of his goalkeeping career
had been in the Essex and Herts Border Combination Youth League
with Norwich's B team or with Lakeford Rangers in the Anglian
Combination.
David was born in Hertfordshire at Hemel Hempstead where his local
professional side was Watford. Indeed his father Bertie was offered
professional terms with them but rejected them in favour of the
security offered by a career in banking. The Dysons moved to Norwich
when David was 12 and he began to attend the Canaries' Centre
of Excellence at Trowse. He joined Poringland Wanderers' junior
side alongside Phil Mortimer and helped
them win the Under 17 Canary Cup. He also played for Poringland's
senior side.
David later played for Wroxham and Wycombe Wanderers before signing
for Dr Martens League side Burnham where he spent 7 seasons. In
the summer of 2001, he joined Mangotsfield but the following July,
he moved again to join Clevedon Town. By the following December,
he was playing for Nick Tanner's Welton
Rovers in the Screwfix Premier Division.
In January 2005, David returned to Burnham having last played
for them in January 2000 at Erith & Belvedere where he broke
his leg.
