Midfielder Marcus Edwards joined Norwich City on loan from Tottenham Hotspur on 15th January 2018 until the end of the 2017/18 season.
Edwards joined the Academy at Tottenham at the age of eight and signed his first professional contract in August 2016. He made his first team debut on 21st September 2016 against Gillingham in the Football League cup but injured his ankle which prohibited any further first team appearances before joining Norwich.
He played for England at the UEFA Under-17 championships in 2015 and was included in the team of the trophy. He also appeared in the 2015 FIFA Under-17 World Cup. In 2017, he was part of the England team which won the UEFA Under-19 Championships, including coming on as substitute in the final against Portugal.
After concerns about his attitude (also shared by Spurs boss Pochettino) and fitness , Edwards did not make his Norwich debut until 30th March 2018, coming on as a late substitute in the 2-0 home defeat to Fulham. He made no further appearances for the Canaries before the loan was terminated on 10th April 2018 and he returned to Spurs.
Reports inThe Guardian on 5th June 2018 suggested that Edwards would seek to leave the club in the summer of 2018 as he can see no way to progress into the first team. Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino seems to be favouring experienced professionals rather than giving youngsters opportunities.
On 30th August 2018 he was loaned to Dutch top flight side Excelsior for the 2018/19 campaign. He achieved three goals and five assists in 30 games
In July 2019, Marcus was training with Brentford having been left out of Tottenham's pre-season planning. Although Nottingham Forest were also reportedly interested, he was sold to Portuguese side Vittoria on 2nd September 2019.
In October 2021 he was named in World Soccer's Top 500 most important players in the world.
He transferred to Sporting Lisbon in January 2022 for a reported fee of €7.67m with a further €500,000 if certain targets are met. He had played 93 games for Vittoria scoring 14 goals.
In the 2023/24 season Sporting won the Portuguese title on 5th May 2024 with two games remaining.
