John Faulkner spent two spells at Carrow Road assisting Mike Walker. He joined the club originally in July 1992
as reserve team coach, a post he held for three seasons before
enjoying a brief spell as the club's under-21 coach. When Walker
returned to Carrow Road in 1996, he appointed Faulkner as his
Assistant Manager. Taking responsibility for the player's physical
fitness and mental preparation, Faulkner came under attack from
the supporters as Norwich flirted with relegation during the 1997/98
campaign. Many games were lost due to late goals. After Walker's
departure in April 1998, Faulkner acted as caretaker manager for
the final game of the season, a 1-0 victory at Reading. However
the arrival of Bruce Rioch and Bryan
Hamilton meant that there was no place for Faulkner in the
new City management / coaching structure and so John left Carrow
Road in June 1998.
John came to prominence as a ball-playing central defender with
non-league Sutton during their giantkilling cup run of 1970. He
was signed by Don Revie for Leeds but made just two appearances
before transferring to Luton. After making over 200 appearances
for the Hatters, John played for four years in the USA before
rejoining Luton's backroom staff where he was Youth Coach for
five years and First Team Coach to Jim Ryan for two seasons. After
Ryan's sacking, John scouted for Everton briefly before joining
the Canaries.
John has returned to scouting, performing this role for Danny
Wilson at Sheffield Wednesday even though he has retained a home
in Norwich.
Applying the lessons learned from football, Faulkner now lectures
on high performance leadership at Cranfield University and has
been involved with Glenn Hoddle's Football Academy in Spain.
On December 31st 2017, it was reported that John had passed away at the age of 69.
