One of my earliest football memories are Steve Goble's crosses
and corners. A youth team product, he turned professional in June
1977 and made his debut against Manchester City in October 1979.
35 appearances followed that produced 2 goals for Steve and many
more for the City strikeforce. Injuries limited his chances and
he attempted to restart his career in Holland with FC Gronigen
in 1981. He returned to Carrow Road in August 1984 but soon returned
to the Netherlands with FC Volendam and FC Utrecht. He joined
Cambridge United in February 1988 for whom he made two appearances.
I discovered in July 2002 that Steve was coaching in the USA
for the Midwest Soccer Academy that tries to teach its students
the Dutch "total football" style of playing. Unfortunately
his work permit was not renewed and he returned to his hometown
of Wells where he working as a beach inspector.
In March 2003, Steve returned to the USA to take up a role as
the Director of Coaching for the LaForza Soccer Club in Fenton,
Michigan. Their Chief Executive described him as vital to their
five year development plan.
