30 year old Argentinian international midfielder Jonás
Gutiérrez joined Norwich City on loan from Newcastle on
13th January 2014 until the end of the 2013/14 season. He re-unites
with Chris Hughton who was his manager
at Newcastle.
A winner of the South American Youth Championships in 2003, he
began his playing career with Velez Sarsfield with whom he won
the Argentinian championship in 2005. He made 99 appearances for
Velez. scoring twice before moving to Spanish side Real Mallorca
in 2005.
After making 96 appearances for Mallorca, scoring five goals,
he unilaterally rescinded his contract with the Spanish side,
after invoking FIFA's Article 17 (commonly known as the Webster
ruling) on 1st July 2008.
The following day, he signed a five year deal with Newcastle
United for an undisclosed fee. Gutiérrez made his debut
for Newcastle United on the opening day of the 200809 season
on 17th August 2008. In the game he impressed both fans and pundits
as he helped his team to a 11 draw against title-holders
Manchester United. Alan Hansen said on Match of the Day that Gutiérrez
"was the most impressive Premier League debutant" on
the opening day of the season.
He won the 2009/10 English Championship with Newcastle.
He signed a new four-year contract at Newcastle on 27th September
2011.
At th time of his transfer to Norwich, he had made 194 appearances
for Newcastle scoring 11 goals. He also had 22 caps for Argentina,
the first coming in February 2007 against France. He was part
of their 2010 World Cup squad.
Gutierrez made his Norwich debut in the 1-0 win over Hull at
Carrow Road on 18th January 2014. He made a total of four appearances
whilst on loan to Norwich.
He missed a large part of the 2014/15 season after being treated
for testicular cancer. Returning to the Newcatsle line-up, he
scored in the 2-0 win over West Ham that secured their Premier
League survival but days afterwards, he was released via a telephone
call from interim manager John Carver.
On 1st September 2015, he signed a one year deal with Spanish
side Deportivo La Coruna. He made seventeen appearances in all competitions, with five of them in the starting eleven. On 6th September 2016, Gutiérrez signed a one-year deal with Defensa y Justicia before moving to Independiente on 10th July 2017. They are considered one of Argentina's big five clubs. On 1th July 2018 he re-signed with Defensa y Justicia before joining Club Athletico Banfield in 2019.
