Philip Hazlewood,
a goalkeeper from Harrogate who was an Associate Schoolboy in
1989/90, emailed me with this potted history of his life:
Philip joined Norwich City as an under-13 goalkeeper from the
PGL set-up run by Kit Carson and stayed
until the end of the 1989/1990 season, signing schoolboy forms
in 1989. He stayed on for A-levels at school (St Thomas More RC
School, Blaydon, Tyne and Wear) after being released, playing
in the meantime for Durham Schools under-19s and in the Northern
League.
He went on to Oxford University (St Hugh's College) to read Modern
Languages. Gained a "Blue" for football, representing
the university at the annual Varsity match against Cambridge at
Craven Cottage, Fulham, in 1994 (Oxford 5, Cambridge 0); the previous
year he turned out for the Centaurs (2nd XI) in the 1-1 draw.
Since then, work as a journalist has taken over and football
hasn't featured apart from a brief stint in the Arthurian League
as a "ringer" for a mate's side. "Being 5ft 7in
and short-sighted doesn't help much - except in the odd five-a-side
or works matches involving journalists who really need to do more
exercise."
After a stint in Paris, post-grad in journalism in Glasgow and
work at The Journal and Evening Chronicle in Newcastle, plus the
Evening News in Edinburgh, he joined the Press Association news
agency, working as a news reporter in London and Birmingham. He
is now at the BBC in Birmingham as a radio reporter.
