Central defender Wayne Houghton has had trials with Colchester, Ipswich and Norwich according to the Green Un of 29th April 2000. He also captained the Essex Under 18 county side and played for Maldon before joining Tiptree United. He was described as a "powerful header of the ball who.. likes to get forward".

Tiptree's fine run in the FA Vase that took them to the final and a defeat to Whitley Bay gained Wayne attention from a number of other clubs. In July 2002, he capitalised on this to move to Ryman leaguers Braintree Town. He has since returned to Tiptree.
