Biography

24 year old Blackburn goalkeeper Jake Kean signed for Norwich on 1st August 2015 as cover for John Ruddy and Declan Rudd. Kean had made 44 appearances for Blackburn. Norwich manager Alex Neil said “Jake is a good, up and coming goalkeeper. We obviously have Declan Rudd as our number two behind first choice John Ruddy…. We needed to have cover for the goalkeeping position and we wanted to bring in someone who could push Declan.”

Kean began his career at hometown club Derby before moving to Blackburn at the end of the 2008/09 season. He had loan spells at Hartlepool (19 appearances), Rochdale (14 appearances), before becoming Rovers' first choice keeper in the 2012/13 and 2013/14 seasons before picking up a knee injury. Making just one further appearance, he was loaned to Yeovil (5 appearances) and Oldham (11 appearances) He was capped by England at Under-20 level in February 2011, playing in a 2-1 defeat to France.

On 7th January 2016, he was loaned to Colchester on a 28 day loan. "It was either come here and play some games or stay and play a couple of reserve-team games," said Kean. "Every player that works Monday to Friday wants to play.My time at Norwich so far has been absolutely brilliant, there's a great bunch of lads and staff there. I've really enjoyed working with (goalkeeping coach) Dean Kiely and he's been good enough to let me come here." He made five appearances before returning to Norwich,

On 14th April 2016, he was loaned to Swindon on an initial seven-day emergency loan after Swindon received special Football League dispensation as both the League One club's senior stoppers, Lawrence Vigouroux and Tyrell Belford, are sidelined with injuries.

He left Norwich by mutual consent on 18th July 2016 and signed for Sheffield Wednesday the same day.

Kean was loaned to Mansfield on 31st December 2016 until the end of the 2016/17 season. He made 21 appearances for the Stags.

On 5th January 2018, he was loaned to Grimsby until the end of the 2017/18 season. He made three appearances for Grimsby. At the end of the season, he was released by Wednesday on 8th May 2018.

Kean then joined Shrewsbury on a summer 2018 training camp in July 2018.

On 14th December 2018, Kean returned to Mansfield signing a month long contract following injury to first choice keeper Bobby Olejnik. His contract was not renewed and he left the club in January 2019.

On 1st July 2019, he signed for Notts County as goalkeeping coach but also registered as a player to provide back-up.

On 19th November 2021 he moved to Burton Albion to become their Head of Goalkeeping. Kean arrives at the Pirelli Stadium following the departure of previous Head of Goalkeeping Andy Quy, who has moved to the United States to take up a role in North Carolina at Charlotte FC. Kean will now work with first-team goalkeepers Ben Garratt, Ellery Balcombe, Callum Hawkins and Kieran O’Hara, while also overseeing the development of the younger keepers coming through the Academy.

Kean said “It was an opportunity that I couldn’t turn down to join Burton. I really enjoyed my time at Notts (County), but it was an opportunity that I couldn’t turn down to work with the gaffer and rest of the staff here." On Kean’s arrival, manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink said: “Jake will oversee the development of the goalkeepers throughout the club and we’re looking forward to working with him. He will be making sure that our first team goalkeepers are competing with each other to a high standard and will help with the progression of goalkeepers through the club’s Academy.”
