In December 1990 Blackburn signed him for £250,000 at the start of Jack Walker's backing of the club. Mimms played in the play-off final as Blackburn was promotion to the top flight. He then retained his place as they finished fourth the following season under Kenny Dalglish's leadership. He was replaced as goalkeeper in November 1993 by Tim Flowers and barely played again. He had made 128 league appearances by the time he joined Crystal Palace in early 1996. He made just one appearance for Palace.
His next club was Preston where he made 27 appearances in 1996/97. He returned to Rotherham in 1997, playing 43 games as well as a loan spell at hometown club York City. He joined York in 1998 making 53 league appearances before finishing his career at Mansfield in 2001.
Between 2001 and 2008 he was goalkeeping coach at Wolves before joining Blackburn in the same role in 2008. After being sacked in December 2012, he joined Oldham as coach in the 2013 pre-season. He left Oldham in February 2014 to become the goalkeeping coach for the Bahrain national team.
He returned to England as goalkeeping coach at West Ham in October 2014. He later coached at Blackpool (2015), Bolton (2015-16) and Hull (2016-17), leaving the latter when Mike Phelan was sacked .
He joined Jamshedpur in the Indian Super League as a goalkeeper coach under Steve Coppell in September 2017. Coppell and Mimms moved to ATK in June 2018. They left in April 2019. In June 2019 Mimms was appointed goalkeeper coach for Bangladesh. He then returned to India in 2020 to coach SC East Bengal, departing them in September 2021.
