On 10th March 2023, 29 year old Conor Murphy was jailed for attacking two people with a metal pole in a row over Covid masks.
Murphy was queuing for food in McDonald's at Peterborough Services on the A1 when he confronted a group demanding to know why they weren’t wearing masks. When told one was exempt because he had a heart bypass, Murphy went back to his car where he sat for three minutes before grabbing the pole and returning to the restaurant where he hit one man over the head.
Murphy was a coach with Norwich's education programme at the time of the incident. Murphy had worked for Norwich City Regional Development Programme for five years, most recently as head coach of football and education. He parted company with the club after his arrest.
Murphy, of Stamford Lane, Warmington, Northamptonshire, was jailed for two years and eight months having pleaded guilty to actual bodily harm, grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon.
