Biography

On 3rd August 2022 Norwich completed the signing of Chilean international midfielder Marcelino Nunez. The 22-year-old has signed a four-year deal at Carrow Road and joins from Club Deportivo Universidad Catolica for a reported fee of €3.9m.

Nunez, typically a dynamic number eight, has spent the entirety of his career prior to his City move with the current Chilean champions having joined the club as a 14-year-old. He made his professional debut for Catolica in 2020. He made 83 appearances for Catolica, scoring on 11 occasions. He won the Chilean title twice and played in the Copa Sudamerica.

At the time of the move he had made ten appearances for his country, making his debut against Colombia in September 2021 and scoring his first international goal in a World Cup qualifier against Bolivia in February 2022.

Nunez made his Norwich debut on 6th August 2022 in the home 1-1 draw with Wigan. His first Norwich goal came a week later in the 2-1 defeat at Hull.

On 30th October 2022 The Sun reported that Spanish giants Sevilla were keeping tabs on Nunez following his positive start to his time in England. Supposedly he Spaniards sent senior scout Jose Manuel Santos Hernandez to check on Núñez’s progress with Norwich.

He made 39 appearances in Norwich's disappoining 2022/23 Championship season, scoring three goals.

On 8th June 2023 Nunez was linked with a £17 million move to Brighton according to reports in Chile. He would replace Argentine midfielder Alexis Mac Allister who had joined Liverpool for £35million.

Nunez made a total of 42 appearances in 2023/24, scoring twice, as Norwich finished sixth reaching the Championship play-offs, before losing 4-0 to Leeds.

On 13th June 2024 Nunez was the subject of a €3.5million bid from Turkish side Trabzonspor which was rejected by the Canaries. Sources in Turkey reported that a second bid of €4.5m had been submitted by Trabzonspor. The club president Ertugrul Dogan confirmed that talks had been held over potentially signing Nunez but admitted a compromise is needed from City on the asking price for any deal to be struck. "Negotiations are continuing but for now, the cost is very high. If the cost decreases, it will happen. We expect this to be the case."

During June 2024 Nunez played for Chile in the Copa America, playing in a 0-0 draw with Peru.

He finished the 2024/25 season with 35 appearances and six goals, including two of the final day of the season against Cardiff. .

Nunez made a shock transfer to arch-rivals Ipswich Town on 29th August 2025 in a deal which will see Norwich net £7.2m plus another £2.5m in achievable add-ons for a player who had 10 months to run on his existing Carrow Road contract. .He had rejected two offers of extensions from City as he entered the final year of his deal in Norfolk. He signed a four year deal with Ipswich. Former Canary Onel Hernandez said "He was one of my good friends, but obviously with that move, I'm not sure if I want to continue that friendship with him. Because obviously now he plays for a rival. It's for me just a disgrace to just join a team like that."

Since news of Nunez's move broke, there has been a tidal wave of reaction from Canaries supporters, some frustrated that the club sanctioned a move to their local rivals. Sporting Director Ben Knapper explained why City concluded that was the best course of action taking into account Nunez's contract situation, the fee and the dynamic within the squad. “It goes without saying, this is a significant transfer for all parties involved. We absolutely understand the feeling and sentiment from our supporters at this time, and this was, of course, an extremely difficult decision for us to take," Knapper told the club's official channels. As with every transfer, there are many factors that we must consider, including the wishes of the player, their contractual position, team performance and, of course, the offer itself. Ultimately, when considering all of those aspects, we firmly believe that this is in the best interests of our club We are committed to making what we feel are the best possible decisions for our football club, assessing all factors in the round, in both the short, medium and long term. Of the possible scenarios and outcomes that this situation has presented, we believe this is the one that leaves the club in the best position.”
