Biography

23 year old Spanish left-back Xavi Quintilla became Norwich's ninth signing of the Summer 2020 transfer window when he joined the Canaries on a season long loan from Spanish side Villareal on 18th August 2020. The deal also contains an option to buy - believed to be around £2.7m.

He joined Barcelona's youth set-up in 2009 from hometown team UE Lleida and progressed to Barcelona's B team, making his senior debut on 22nd August 2015 against UE Cornella. In August 2016 he was loaned to fellow Third Division side Lleida Esportiu for the 2016/17 campaign.

On 1st September 2017 he terminated his contract with Barcelona and joined Villareal's B team. On 30 March 2019 he made his La Liga debut against Celta de Vigo. He had played 32 games for Villareal at the time of his move to Norwich, including 23 in the 2019/20 season in the top flight, his last game being against Real Madrid. Former Arsenal boss Unai Emery has taken the hotseat at the Estadio de la Ceramica and has sanctioned a deal for Quintilla to leave the the Spanish club. Villarreal have two other left-backs returning from loans as well as first-choice Alberto Moreno.

He has been capped by Spain at all levels from Under-16 to Under-19.

Speaking about why he opted to join the Canaries, he said: “I’m so happy and proud to be here and to play for Norwich in England and in the Championship. My philosophy and my football is similar to Norwich’s. I played before for Villarreal and Barcelona’s academy, and I think Norwich works a bit like them, so it’s great for me,” he told the club’s official channels. I come here to play as many minutes as possible. We want to play good football for the fans to see. I would love to play in the Premier League, so I will do everything possible to get Norwich into the top league.”

Xavi made an impressive debut for Norwich on 12th September 2020 in the 1-0 away win at Huddersfield on the opening day of the 2020/21 league campaign. He became the first Norwich player whose first name starts with an X and also the first player whose surname begins with a Q. He scored his first goal for Norwich on 24th April 2021 away at QPR. He followed this with a goal in the 4-1 win over Reading on 1st May 2021 which secured Norwich the Championship title. He made a total of 12 appearances for City, scoring twice.

On 17th June 2021 he was linked with a trio of relegated La Liga sides as he is reportedly not part of Unai Emery's plans at Villareal. Spanish journalist, Ángel García, reports serious interest in the attacking full back from Huesca, Real Valladolid and Eibar

On 14th July 2021 he joined Spanish second tier side Legranes on a season long loan from Villarreal with an option to buy for a reported €2m.  Leganes finished third in the Spanish second division last season but missed out on promotion via the play-offs.

In June 2022 he was linked with a loan move to Preston.according to Lancashire Live.

On 6th July 2022 he signed for Portuguese top flight side Santa Clara Acores on a two year deal. Santa Clara finished seventh in the Primeira Liga in 2021/22 just eight points shy of European qualification. The hope is that Quintilla will inject quality that could help them reach the Europa Conference League next season. He played 17 times for them.

He returned to Spain on 11th August 2023 signing for second tier AD Alcorcon. After they were relegated at the end of the 2023/24 season, Quintilla opted to leave the club as he was out of contract and joined Cypriot champions APOEL on 8th June 2024.
