City Under-16 player Phil Roberts was nominated for the Republic
of Ireland Under-16 squad which will contest two friendly matches
against the Czech Republic in November 2009. Phil had been on
the fringes of the Norwich Academy Under-18 team during 2009-10
and now got a chance to impress as the Irish build their squad
in preparation for 2010's UEFA Under-17 Championships.
Prior to joining Norwich, Phil played at youth levels for Charlton
before being released and also went on trial at Liverpool
In March and April 2010, Phil trialled with Arsenal and signed
Academy terms with them in May 2010. In his first season, the
Newham-born attacker made 11 starts for the Under-18s, scoring
four goals. In 2011/12, his consistent performances for Steve
Boulds side earned him a call-up to the reserves, where
he scored a debut goal against Wolves. A very capable finisher,
he proved this in 2012/13 topping the scoring charts with 10 goals
for the Under-18s.
On 31st August 2012, Phil joined Inverness Caledonian Thistle
on loan until January 2013, later extended until the end of the
2012/13 season
Phil made 23 appearances for Inverness scoring once against Dundee
United. Returning to Arsenal, the club announced at the beginning
of June 2013 that they would not be renewing his contract when
it expires at the end of the month.
Following his release from Arsenal, Roberts went on trial with
League Two side, Wycombe Wanderers, scoring two goals in a pre-season
friendly at Farnborough before the match was abandoned after the
pitch was dangerous to play. In July 2013, Roberts played on trial
for Colchester's Under-21 development squad in a friendly against
Hadleigh.
On 26th July 2013, Roberts returned to Scotland joining Scottish
Championship side Falkirk after playing as a trialist. Roberts
will be joining manager Gary Holt, who
knows him from his time at Norwich City. The next day, 27th July
2013, Roberts made his Falkirk debut, in the first round of the
Ramsdens Cup, in a 21 win over Clyde.
Roberts moved to Dundee on May 8th 2014. He had played 30 games
for Falkirk, scoring six goals.
On 2nd February 2015, Roberts was loaned by Dundee to Alloa Athletic.
After spending a brief period in Ireland with Sligo Rovers, he signed for Conference side Chelmsford City in early January 2017. Manager, Rod Stringer, was delighted with the signing, saying: “Philip has gleaned plenty of experience, especially in Scotland, where he represented Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Falkirk, Dundee and Alloa and has been capped at both under 17’s and 19’s level. "He had a youth career at Arsenal and adds quality to the group which is paramount in our quest for promotion.”
Over the next two seasons, Paul played for Hemel FC, Dartford, Wealdstone, Hayes & Yeading, Romford and Welling before joining Brentwood Town on 14th September 2020. After some time with Tilbury and Hemel Hempstead Town, he joined Margate on 7th January 2023.
