Kane Robinson, a centre-forward
from East Ham, played for the Under-13s in 1997/98. Previously
with Chelsea at the age of 11, Kane abandoned football for his
other love - music. At 15, he, now renamed Kano, was making music
in his bedroom and MC'ing on the pirate station Déjà
Vu with the fabled Nasty Crew. In 2004, following a tour with
his friend and mentor Mike Skinner aka The Streets (Kano guested
on the single "Fit But You Know It"), he won the Best
Newcomer award at the Urban Music Awards. This January, after
signing a deal with 679 records, also home to The Streets, he
was featured in the BBC's sounds of 2005 list, compiled by 100
broadcasters and critics, alongside the Kaiser Chiefs and Bloc
Party. Not your steortyped DJ hoodlum, Kano passed his GSCEs and
has an A level in graphic design.
His music is of the
"grime" style, which Dizzee Rascal introduced to the
masses, but has more elements of rock and reggae that makes it
more accessible. His first album Home Sweet Home came out in September
2005.
