In June 2017, the Daily Record reported that Rangers were keen to make Savage their new Director of Football. Savage worked on recruitment and game analysis at Accies before linking up with Neil in Norfolk and is credited with unearthing the likes of Tony Andreu in Scotland and some of City’s European forays that attracted Ivo Pinto, Nelson Oliveira and Timm Klose to the club.
In June 2017 Savage followed Alex Neil to Preston.
In November 2019, he was linked with a move to Southampton as their new Sporting Director to replace Ross Wilson who joined Rangers.
On 14th December 2020 Savage was appointed as Scottish club Hearts' Sporting Director and will take up his role in January 2021. He said "I am delighted to be coming back to Scotland, I look forward to putting the experience I have gained over my time down south and the network of contacts I have built to the best possible use at Hearts. I can't wait to get started."
