Under 18 international midfielder Anthony Shields played for Omagh
Town and Norwich City before joining Peterborough. Born in June
1980, Tony was one of the shortest players in Division Three at
5'7 but has still managed to score with his head in competitive
matches against Reading and Darlington. "What he lacks in height,
he makes up for in passion and tenacity" (

Shields was spotted playing in his native country by former Posh
Football in the Community Officer Tony Williams almost four years
ago. His maturity and will to succeed impressed all at London Road
and it wasn’t long before the youngster was given a major role in
Posh’s successful youth team of two seasons ago. He broke into the
first team at the end of the 1997/98 season. Although primarily
a midfielder, he has also led the attack on occasion. In March 2000,
Shields was offered a new five year contract by Peterborough
Transfer-listed in the Autumn of 2001, Tony joined Stevenage on
loan on 24th January 2002. However he was homesick and wished to
return to his native Ireland. He did this at the end of the 2001/02
season, joining Derry City on a part time basis, He returned to
Peterborough making 33 appearances in 2002/03. However he planned
to return to Ireland in February 2004 so Posh manager Barry Fry
sent him on a three month loan to Aldershot in October 2003. This
move later became permanent but Aldershot cut his contract in March
2004 as Tony was finding the travelling from his new home in Ireland
difficult. A sending off resulting in a three match ban when only
9 games remained, forced Aldershot's hand.
