Rangers
left-back Steven Smith became Norwich's third signing of the 2010
pre-season when he signed for the Canaries on 2nd June 2010. Smith
agreed a two-year deal on a Bosman transfer after leaving Glasgow
Rangers - and immediately goes head-to-head with Adam
Drury for the left-back berth in Paul
Lambert's Championship starting XI.
Smith is from Bellshill - the same part of Glasgow which produced
former City defender Malky Mackay. Smith
made his debut for Rangers in 2004, but a little over two years
later suffered groin problems that sidelined him for 16 months.
He forced his way back into the Rangers first team in April 2008
and was part of the side which won the league and cup double,
but again suffered injuries during the summer which sidelined
him until November.
He started seven league games in 2009/10 - including the Old
Firm derby in March - and also played in the Scottish League Cup
final win over St Mirren.
However, both Lambert and Smith say the injury problems are a
thing of the past. I'm pretty sure he has got over that,
said Lambert. It is never easy being out the length of time
he was out and then you get thrown into an Old Firm game, it's
unbelievable, but (Rangers manager) Walter Smith obviously saw
something and put him back in, which is great. Rangers has
offered him a new contract but he chose to join City instead
Starting the season with injuries, Steven did not make his debut
until the 28th September 2010 clash with Leicester when he came
on as a 80th minute substitute. His first start came on 2nd October
2010 in the 3-0 win at Bristol City.
Unable to settle in Norwich, he was allowed to return to his
homeland at the end of January 2011 joining Aberdeen on loan on
31st January 2011.
Despite being linked with a permanent switch to Aberdeen, he
joined Preston on a free transfer on 12th August 2011
Steven had his contract with Preston terminated by mutual consent
on 10th April 2012. Injuries had limited him to 14 appearances.
At the end of April, he signed for Major League Soccer side Portland
Timbers.
Smith parted company with Portland at the beginning of December
2012. He trialled with Rangers the following month
Smith resigned for Rangers on 18th June 2013 signing a two year
deal. Rangers won the Scottish League One title on 12th March
2014 win a win over Aidreieonians.
On 2nd July 2015, Smith signed for Kilmarnock, following Rangers'
failure to win promotion from the Scottish Championship into the
Scottish Premier League. He signed a three year contract with
Kilmarnock. He had made 34 appearances, scoring twice, since rejoining
Rangers.
He was released by Kilmarnock in May 2018 having made 60 appearances.
Since 2021 he has been a youth team coach at Rangers. When Rangers sacked manager Michael Beale in October 2023, Steven Davis was placed in temporary charge with Smith supporting him along with Alex Rae, Brian Gilmour and Colin Stewart.
