Paul Stephenson joined
Norwich City from Hartlepool on 8th December 2007as first team
coach, completing Glenn Roeder's new
management team
Stephenson, born at Wallsend, played alongside Paul Gascoigne
at Newcastle and in the England Youth side, and made his first
team debut at 17. After 67 appearances for the St James' Park
club, he moved on to Millwall, Gillingham, Brentford, York and
Hartlepool, finishing with a career total of over 500 games and
36 goals.
When his playing days were over, he moved straight into coaching. He
became assistant youth team coach at Hartlepool, then youth team
coach. While youth team coach, Stephenson guided the youth team
to victory in the Under 19s section of Dallas Cup. He had
a stint as caretaker boss towards the end of the 2005-06 season
after the dismissal of manager Martin Scott. But despite Hartlepool
being unbeaten in his first five games in charge, he was unable
to stave off relegation to League Two and chose to return to his
job as youth team coach
Stephenson was offered the Norwich job in early November. Nevertheless
despite some trouble with the Hartlepool chairman regarding compensation,
Glenn Roeder was ultimately successful with the appointment and
Stephenson commenced work with the Canaries in December 2007.His
first game in charge for the Canaries was a 4-0 reserve team victory
over Peterborough.
Stephenson was sacked by Norwich City on 14th January 2009 following
the club's poor run of performances which also led to Roeder's
departure
Stephenson wasn't out of work for long, joining Lee Clark's Huddersfield
as development coach on 9th February 2009. They were both sacked
in February 2012.
He joined Accrington Stanley as Assistant Manager to Leam Richardson
in 2012 but left the club by mutual consent on 9th December 2014.
He had twice acted as caretaker manager for Stanley.
He was appointed assistant manager of Kilmarnock in February 2021 by former teammate Tommy Wright.
