It says little for
Richard's professional career that I cannot remember him as a Canary.
I began following Norwich in 1980 and Richard's career spanned from
1978 to 1983 and resulted in 68 first team appearances, five of
which were a substitute. He joined the club as a Associate Schoolboy
in 1975. Another indication of his ability is that when granted
a free transfer from Norwich, he did not move to another league
club but rather joined Norfolk amateur side Poringland. In Richard's
defence, it has to be said that Grimsby made an offer but that Richard
rejected their terms.
Since his departure from Carrow Road, he had done the rounds of
Norfolk's amateur sides playing with Watton and Dereham Hobbies
before joining Thetford as Assistant Manager and then managing Dereham
Hobbies. A left back, his man-to -man marking skills were especially
admired by managers
John Bond and
Ken Brown.
