Biography

Paul Tong managed Norwich City's Academy Under-11 side and is also a goalkeeping coach.

He served many years as club football manager at Great Yarmouth making him the second longest-serving manager after Bill Punton (21 years) for whom he was assistant manager at Great Yarmouth in the late eighties. Paul and Bill also worked together at Diss Town when they jointly left Yarmouth in 1990.

Paul was once an apprentice goalkeeper at Norwich City and played against Gt Yarmouth in the City 'A' side in the seventies; now he coaches one of the City schoolboys sides himself. He has managed several non-league clubs in Norfolk, including Yarmouth's old rivals and neighbours Gorleston.

Paul is a high-profile manager, and can frequently be heard on Radio Norfolk on their Friday evening local football show "Local Report" where Bill Punton is the regular pundit alongside reporter Nick Bowler. Despite tempting offers, Paul had not been enticed away from Wellesley Road where he feels part of the family club. In his day job, Paul works as a contracts manager for club sponsors Norfolk Frames

This changed in May 2004 when he stepped down from the Yarmouth manager's position. After a season in which the Bloaters had struggled, Tong said "It will be a very sad day but I feel it is time for me to relinquish the role and hopefully give the club the opportunity to secure some new blood."

Tong said he'd had a fantastic time in his seven years and the club will always be close to his heart. "During these seven years Yarmouth Town has been a big part of my life and has taken me to many interesting places, for which I'm grateful."

Paul was not out of the game for long returning to Diss Town at the beginning of June 2004 to become joint manager with Robert Fleck, replacing Rick Neave who had passed away the previous November.

In April 2005, it was announced that Tong and former Kings Lynn manager Kevin Boon would take joint charge of Fakenham for the 2005/6 season, replacing Stuart Woodhouse who was taking a break after two demanding years in charge. Tong had been Assistant Manager for the Ghosts earlier in his career.

Boon and Tong quit Fakenham in March 2007 after a 1-1 draw with Swaffham, stating that certain club members did not want them there. Tong said "The budget has been cut and there is a group of people who don't want us at the club. We feel it is best that we walk away. We are gutted and disappointed - perhaps we are too powerful characters. There are quality people at Fakenham and we have enjoyed our time there. We have done it for nothing, but you have either all got to pull together or not at all.”

Paul returned to Diss Town, for his fourth spell with the Tangerines, at the end of March 2007 to replace manager Richard Carter who had quit. Tong said "“I believe Diss have the potential to be the second biggest non league club in the county, after King's Lynn. Who wouldn't want that opportunity.” Former colleague Kevin Boon moved to Wisbech at the same time to become their joint manager.

Tong left Diss in April 2008 and was replaced by former Dereham manager Robert Taylor. Tong told the BBC that he found out second hand that the manager's job had been offered to someone else for next season. "You would have thought someone would have said something to me, I don't think it's the way to do business," Tong says he tendered his resignation to the Diss board but was told they wanted him to stay on. Tong's final match in charge of the Tangerines was the 2-0 win over Norfolk rivals Fakenham Town and he said he was disappointed with the way his departure had been handled. "Diss is an excellent club but one or two of them [board members] need to look at themselves," Tong added.

Tong wasn't out of management for long and rejoined Great Yarmouth as joint manager with Kevin Cruikshank in June 2008. He stood down in early September 2011 saing that his role had been compromised. He then took charge at Kirkley & Pakefield on 10th September 2011. In a club statement, Barrie Atkins, K&P’s adult secretary, said: “Kirkley & Pakefield football club are pleased to confirm Paul Tong as first team manager. Paul looks forward to working with his assistant manager Marty Hubble, first team coach Robbie Horton and assisted by Mike Guymer our adult football co-ordinator. Paul has spent many years as manager at Great Yarmouth and Diss FC and brings a wealth of experience to the role. We look forward to a successful and rewarding relationship."
