Nigerian central defender Joseph Yobo joined Norwich City on
30th January 2014 on loan from Turkish club Fenerbahce until the
end of the 2013/14 season.
Yobo left Nigeria side Michellin-Harcourt to join Standard Liège
in 1998. He made his first team debut in 2000, and went on to
appear 46 times. In 2001, he was bought by Marseille. Soon after
making his debut, Yobo was loaned to Tenerife. After around nine
months, Yobo returned to Marseille, before joining Everton, again
on loan, in July 2002. A £1 million fee was required to
register the player, and he became the first signing of David
Moyes. An option to make the move permanent was taken up and completed
in 2003 after a dispute between Yobo and Marseille was settled,
with Everton agreeing a fixed additional fee of £4 million
Yobo went on to play 259 games for Everton, scoring 10 goals.
On 31st August 2010, Yobo signed a one-year loan contract with
Turkish side Fenerbahçe. Yobo played in 30 official matches
and scored once, helping his team win the league title. On 6th
September 2011, Fenerbahçe and Everton agreed on another
loan deal for €700,000. On 4th August 2012, he re-signed
for Fenerbahçe once again, but this time on a permanent
basis on a 3-year contract.
He made his international debut in Spring 2001 and played for
Nigeria in the 2002 World Cup. At the time of his move to Norwich,
he was captain of the Nigerian national team and had made 95 appearances.
Yobo made his Norwich debut in the 0-0 draw with Manchester City
at Carrow Road on 8th February 2014. He was then recalled to the
Nigeria squad.
He made a total of 8 appearances but could not prevent Norwich
being relegated to the Championship.
In May 2014, he was included in Nigeria's World Cup squad. He
became the first Nigerian to play 100 games for his country when
he played against France in the second round of the World Cup
but scored an own goal in France's 2-0 win. After the game, he
announced his retirement from international football. .
A free transfer following the end of his contract with Fenerbahce,
he was linked with a move to Arsenal at the end of September 2014
to cover their defensive injury woes.
In August 2016, it was reported that he had signed for Nigerian Professional Football League side Kano Pillars but this was denied by Yobo.
