The Canaries were believed to be chasing the signature of highly-rated
Mansfield centre-half Alex John-Baptiste. The 21-year-old
defender is out of contract at Field Mill and is reported to have
made two visits to Norwich in the past 10 days to see the facilities
at Carrow Road and Colney, before returning to hold talks with
manager Peter Grant.
John-Baptiste, 5ft 11in and born at Sutton-in-Ashfield, has made
166 senior appearances for Mansfield, scoring six goals. He made
his first team debut at the age of 17 in March 2003 and had loan
spells at Tamworth and Burton Albion before establishing himself
in the Stags' defence. Apart from centre-half, he has played at
right-back or as a defensive midfielder.
Striker Luke Varney today revealed he had turned down
Norwich City in opting for a £2.5m transfer to Charlton
Athletic. Crewe Alexandra marksman Varney completed his move to
The Valley yesterday, but reports in the Midlands claim the Canaries
had matched the Gresty Road club's valuation of the player. Varney
said: "Alan Pardew told me their aim was to go straight back
up, which accords with my ambition to play in the Premier League.
I could have left it until later in the summer, but I felt this
was the best move for me. Norwich were in for me as well, but
I didn't think they were in the same bracket as Charlton.
If City manager Peter Grant has missed out on Varney, he is expected
to recruit at least one new face from Crewe, with full-back Jon
Otsemobor on his way for Norwich to complete a medical, according
to his agent.

St Johnstone striker Jason Scotland has issued a come and
get me plea to Norwich City manager Peter Grant. The Canaries
had identified the Trinidad and Tobago international as a possible
summer transfer target but have yet to follow up on their interest,
much to the bemusement of the player and his agent Mike Berry.
Norwich's chief scout Alan Woods has been looking at Scotland
this season and has seen him bang in 26 goals for St Johnstone
but City have yet to follow up on their initial interest. Alan
Woods was looking at him a little while ago and we were expecting
to hear more this summer but so far there's been nothing,
said Berry. We would of course be interested to talk to Norwich
City and I'm surprised that, given Peter Grant's knowledge of
the Scottish game, that he has not made a move for Jason.

player-of-the-season earned rave reviews operating in a wide left

Norwich City boss Peter Grant was today linked with a move for
Cardiff City goalkeeper Neil Alexander. The Bluebirds shot-stopper
is out of contract in the summer and will be available on a free
transfer after rejecting a new deal with the Welsh club. Grant
could move for Alexander after the 29-year-old admitted that he
is pleased to be linked with the Canaries.
I am obviously flattered to be linked with a club like Norwich
City but while I'm under contract at Cardiff my thoughts are 100
per cent behind them and promotion. What will happen in the summer,
will happen. However, it seems that my future will not be at Cardiff
City next season.

Roeder saw the Jarrow-born striker Kerr go close to scoring on
his debut for United's reserves against Bolton Wanderers earlier
