Although Roger joined
Norwich in August 1971 and signed as a professional in 1973, he
had only made 84 appearances prior to his departure from Carrow
Road in December 1981. This was mainly due to the solid performances
in goal for Norwich by
Kevin Keelan and
Chris Woods. Loan
spells at Bolton, Cambridge and Orient provided a change of scenery
and some first team action. December 1981 saw a very different setting
as he joined Hong Kong side Eastern Athletic.
A return to England came in August 1983 with a move to Burnley for
whom he played 83 times. In 1985, he joined Cambridge (37 games)
before moving to Birmingham City in March 1986( 57 games) and then
to Sheffield United in late 1987 (5 games). Loan spells followed
at Wolves, Colchester and Cardiff City before he made a permanent
move to the Welsh side in December 1989. Cardiff's precarious financial
position prevented them from paying Roger his wages and he quit
Ninian Park in February 1991. According to
Mike
Davage's article
Canaries on the other wing in the
1996-97 club handbook, Roger was working for a sports centre but
a conversation we had at the Norwich City centenary dinner revealed
that he runs his own greeting cards shop in the West Midlands.
