Danish Under 21
international Henrik Mortensen was signed from Danish side Aarhus
in October 1989 in an attempt to boost Norwich's forward line. Like
so many Canaries before him, he made a promising start scoring on
both his reserve team and first team debuts. The latter was a Zenith
Data Systems cup victory over Brighton & Hove Albion in November
1989 that I remember well for I accompanied a young lady named Heather
whom I was very attracted to although nothing much ever came of
it.
Despite a successful reserve team record of 25 goals in 54 games,
Henrik failed to establish a regular first team position and played
in total only 23 games for Norwich, nine of which were as substitute.
His only other first team goal came in a FA Cup tie against Swindon.
By January 1991, he was seeking a transfer. To paraphrase
Mike
Davage, reserve team football was no match for nights in Europe
as he had played European Cup and European Cup Winners Cup ties
for Anderlecht of Belgium earlier in his career. A pelvic injury
sustained against Ipswich in October 1991 forced Henrik to take
early retirement from the game and Norwich released him in December
1991. Rumour has it that he has attempted to resurrect his career
with his original club Aarhus.
