Biography

On 30th May 2024, after 10 days of speculation, Norwich appointed Johannes Hoff Thorup as their new head coach, replacing David Wagner and becoming Norwich's.43rd Manager/Head Coach. He signed a three year deal after Norwich paid £500k in compensation to FC Nordsjaelland.

Hoff Thorup was born in Frederiksberg in Denmark on 19th February 1989. He played for his local team Frederiksberg and for AB as a youth before he began coaching at the latter in 2012 after he failed to break into the senior team. He moved to FC Nordsjaelland in 2015 as youth team coach working alongside former Canary Steen Nedergaard., He progressed to assistant manager in 2021. On 7th January 2023 he was appointed manager. He took them to second place in the Danish Superliga. In his 69 matches in charge, he recorded 35 wins, 18 draws and only 16 defeats. Nordsjaelland scored 138 goals and took 123 points during his tenure, with a win rate of over 50pc. Thorup has won plaudits for his progressive, possession-based and offensive style of play and integration of youth players. Players that Thorup nurtured included Mohammed) Kudus at West Ham, Stanislav Lobotka at Napoli and Simon Adringa at Brighton. In the Europa League in 2023/24 they beat Fenerbache 6-1 and Partizan 5-0;

He told official club channels: "I'm excited, I hope that the supporters are excited as well. I hope that we can create something together, it's so important that they are proud of the team. I feel the connection with the people, the club and the city. Everyone I have met with so far is so humble, nice and easy-going. I have my ideas and I have my principles in the way that we are going to play, but I am also here to listen to some of the good stuff that has already been done. I have to make sure that I am very clear that this is something that we do together and everyone has to have that feeling.”

Sporting Director Ben Knapper said “We’re delighted to welcome Johannes to Norwich City. After a thorough and robust process, Johannes stood out amongst an incredible shortlist of candidates. Through all of our interactions, it was clear that Johannes aligns perfectly with our vision and values. He is a proven developer, with a clear and demonstrable playing style. We believe that Johannes will be the perfect fit for the next stage of our new and exciting journey.”

Thorup and his assistant Glen Riddersholm were sacked by Norwich on 22nd April 2025 following a run of six defeats in eight games, including both games over the Easter weekend playing poorly and with players in unfamiliar positions. Norwich had won 14 of 47 games under Thorup and were in 14th position. They had scored more Championship goals (67) than any team other than leaders Leeds, but have conceded 66, a total exceeded only by Sheffield Wednesday, Portsmouth, Cardiff City and Plymouth Argyle.. "While we made this appointment with a long-term focus and in line with our wider club strategy and direction, unfortunately recent results and performances have deemed it necessary for us make a change," said sporting director Ben Knapper. "They are both fantastic people who worked tirelessly to help improve and move our football club forward. We all wish the two of them the best in the next stage of their respective careers." Jack Wilshire was placed in charge for Norwich's final two games of the season.

The following month he was linked with the managerial vacancy at Queens Park Rangers.according to The Telegraph on 15th May 2025. Whilst QPR still haven't technically sacked Marti Cifuentes, placing the 42-year-old on gardening leave means that the club have taken his managerial duties away whilst still holding his contract, so a club can come in and pay compensation for his services. Therefore, the Hoops will be looking elsewhere to bring in a new head coach. According to John Percy of the Telegraph, QPR have already held talks with Thorup. QPR finished just one point and two places below Norwich City in the Championship this season, but the R's feel that Thorup could be the man to take them higher up the table after a third consecutive finish in the bottom half of the second tier.
