John Watkins was an Associate Schoolboy with Norwich City when the club's financial crisis saw them release many talented young players such as John and Darren Terrington. John, a pupil of Sprowston High School, earned a reprieve with Colchester United. John spent some time with Diss Town Reserves on loan to gain more experience.
