Hot-shot of the weekend was Ade Akinbiyi who netted a hat-trick for Burnley at Luton as the Clarets won 3-2. Other goalscorers included Craig Bellamy who got Blackburn's fourth as they beat Charlton 4-1. Ivar Ingimarsson got Reading's winner in their 2-1 win at QPR whilst Darel Russell scored Stoke's second in their 3-0 win at home to Brighton.

In the FA Cup first round, Paul Hayes got the only goal of the game in Barnsley's home clash with Darlington. Debutant Adam Tann scored Notts County's opener in their 2-0 win at Bristol City. Greg Heald got Aldershot's second in ther 3-1 win at Burnham. Jamie Cureton scored two second-half goals as Colchester defeated non-league Leamington 9-1. Gary Holt scored Forest's goal in their 1-1 draw at home to Weymouth. Keith Briggs netted Stockport's second as they defeated Swansea 2-0. Jamie Slabber scored in Grays' 3-0 win at York.

North of the border, John Sutton got the winner as St Mirren defeated Hamilton 2-1 to win the Bell's Scottish League Challenge Cup final.
