With
two games over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend, there were a number of opportunities
for former Canaries to hit the back of the net or to hit the headlines In the Premiership on Saturday 15th April, Jimmy Bullard scored the opening goals at St James Park when Wigan took on Newcastle. Unfortunately for the Latics, they succumbed to a 3-1 defeat and saw three first-half injuries including a knee injury for Matt Jackson. In the Championship, Ade Akinbiyi and Leigh Bromby celebrated as their victory over Cardiff on Friday night gave Sheffield United promotion to the Premiership. On the Saturday, Jason Jarrett scored Preston's winner in a 2-1 dfeat of Leicester at the Walkers Stadium. Norwich gave full debuts to Paul Gallacher and Michael Spillane but they fell to a Tudgay goal which gave Sheffield Wednesday a 1-0 victory. In League One, Clayton Fortune scored a late (86th minute) equaliser for Port Vale at Walsall. In League Two, youngster Lee Frecklington also scored in the 86th minute to give home side Lincoln a draw against Bury. Drewe Broughton's goalscoring spree continued with a goal at home to Rochdale but the visitors equalised in the last minute to deny Rushden all three points - leavinghem in the relegation zone. No former Canaries were on target on Easter Saturday in the Conference or the Scottish Leagues although Paul Cook's Accrington Stanley celebrated a long-awaited return to the Football League. A full series of games on Easter Monday in the Premiership produced no goals for any former Canaries although Jimmy Bullard scored on Tuesday 18th April 2006 in Wigan's 3-2 defeat of Aston Villa. There were no goals in the Championship either although Darren Huckerby and Rob Earnshaw (twice) helped Norwich come from two-nil down to record a 3-2 home win over QPR. Adam Hinshelwood's Brighton and Andy Marshall's Millwall were both relegated on Monday along with Crewe. Ady Boothroyd's Watford secured a place in the Play-Offs as did Jason Jarrett's Preston and David Healy's Leeds. Healy would score for the Elland Road side on Tuesday 18th April in a 1-1 draw with Sheffield United. In League One, substitute Nicky Southall scored Notts Forest's winner in a 2-1 defeat of Yeovil which sees Forest push into the play-off positions. Trevor Benjamin scored from the spot to open the scoring for Swindon in a vital 2-1 win at Scunthorpe. There were no relevent goals in League Two whilst in the Conference, Mark Peters scored an own goal to give Kidderminster a 1-0 win over Cambridge. |
