2019/20 SEASON

Despite being promoted as Champions the previous season, Norwich had the smallest transfer budget of all the Premier League teams spending just on Sam Byram in the summer of 2019. There was expenditure on promising youngsters and the Promotion winning side had bonuses in their contracts and fees were spent on loaning in Patrick Roberts, Ibrahim Amadou and Ralf Fahrmann; none of whom made a positive impact. Significant injury problems saw Norwich often with only two (semi-)fit central defenders. Despite early season wins over Newcastle and the 2019 League champions Man City; Norwich threw away too many leads and were bottom of the table by Christmas. When the season was put on hold due to the Covid-19 pandemic in March, Norwich were bottom but had beaten Leicester and knocked Spurs out of the FA Cup. When the season resumed in June, Norwich had additional injury problems and failed to gain any points, often losing without scoring - a Christmas time toe injury for Teemu Pukki also contributing to Norwich's decline. On 11th July 2020, a 4-0 home defeat, thankfully behind closed doors, to West Ham confirmed Norwich's relegation. Sporting Director Stuart Webber described it as going to war with no gun as the Canaries' operating model, installed when the club nearly went bust two seasons earlier, having achieved promotion too early.
